Bridgerule Primary School, Devon
Bridgerule Primary School, located in Holsworthy, Devon is a small village school of 24 pupils. Most of the school is decorated with bright colours. Whilst this is suitable for classrooms, staff and pupils felt that the Library should feel much calmer and the previous bright blue walls and the unstructured storage was not allowing for this.
The Library is a small room located away from the classrooms and linked to the main Hall. It is used on a daily basis by children to select and return books and for group reading however, due to the storage layout it was not possible for it to be used on a more regular basis.
BEFORE:
The school wanted to see this room continue to be used as a library and become a place where children could come to research projects, read quietly and work in groups away from the classroom
Following student engagement sessions it was decided that purpose built shelving should be built along the walls to provide sturdy and practical space to put books. Architects from NPS South West designed the layout of the room to allow for a quiet reading corner as well as some practical desk space. A colour scheme of Light & Space was the best option to take for this space as the room was quite small & dark and needed a refreshing lift. The warm relaxing tones of Coastal Glow for the main walls, combined with the freshness of Wellbeing for the window reveals & accents added interest & fun for the children, whilst creating a bright & airy learning environment.
The work completely transformed the room into an oasis of calm and organisation. To tie in with the reveal of the library and World Book Day staff and pupils dressed up as their favourite book characters to make the day even more exciting…
